A Prescott councilor is being remembered as an advocate for everyone.
Prescott Mayor Gauri Shankar says Coun. Ruth Lockett has passed away at the age of 73.
Lockett fell late last month at the Alaine Chartrand Community Centre and a Facebook post from her family says she received emergency surgery after being transported to the hospital where she was placed into a medically induced coma.
She died this week.
Shankar says the flag at Prescott Town Hall is being flown at half mast in memory of Lockett who he adds owned the Tim Hortons restaurant in town that opened 30 years ago.
Shankar says Lockett volunteered on many boards and was a dynamic member of council who always came to meetings prepared and who had the communities best interests at heart.
He says he knew he wanted her on council.
“She was one of the first people that I convinced to run for council because I respected her intelligence, her kindness and her community spirit so much.”
Shankar says the town will look into how it can best honor Lockett.
He adds that he had been hoping that her council seat could be left empty out of respect but because there’s a year and a half until the next municipal election, a bylaw states that it must be filled.
Shankar says they will take their time finding someone to join council.
