Police reminding you to stay safe after close call on St. Lawrence River

Police are reminding you that no ice is safe ice after a close call on the St. Lawrence River.

Ontario Provincial Police say an incident last Thursday saw a large piece of ice near the Iroquois Dam break away from the shore, taking a man who was ice fishing with it.

First responders were called to the scene and a rescue helicopter was on standby but police say the strong wind pushed the ice, which had drifted nearly two kilometres, back to shore.

The man was able to scramble to safety and you’re being urged to stay on the shore.
