Police reminding drivers to put the phone down while behind the wheel

Driver’s have one job when they are behind the wheel, make sure they are driving safely.

So says Ontario Provincial Police Spokesman Bill Dixon who tells Moose FM that one second of inattention by a driver who’s looking at a mobile device can result in a death or a serious injury.

With the weather turning warmer and more drivers anticipated to be on the roads, Dixon says that while there’s been laws against distracted driving in place for a while, some still do it and put others at risk.

He says that some people may feel the rules of the road don’t apply to them.

“Maybe it’s people feel that they’re different, that they won’t be impacted, they can look at their phone as long as somebody else isn’t doing it, but in reality each and every person is taking a huge chance.”

Drivers who violate the province’s distracted driving law face significant penalties.

Novice drivers face similar fines as well as a 30-day license suspension for a first conviction.
