Prescott approves cost sharing arrangement for physician recruitment

Prescott is looking to new ways to recruit physicians and bring them to the town.

Health Workforce Innovations Inc., a company that recruits doctors from other countries to come to Canada, approached the United Counties of Leeds and Grenville last fall.

They were hired under an agreement to bring 10 family doctors to the region, and create a primary care practice model, with the deal in place until Jan. 31, 2026 with an option to extend.

Separately, the United Counties of Leeds and Grenville, the Town of Prescott, Town of Gananoque and the City of Brockville came up with a cost sharing arrangement to pay for the agreement that’s based on the number of residents that live in each.

Prescott Town Council voted in agreement of that deal at their meeting on Monday night.

Prescott Mayor Gauri Shankar says he believes the town is putting its best foot forward.

“We’re doing our best, we’ve got a brand new rink, a brand new recreational complex, we’ve got a lot of options that are looking forward for the doctors, a private school, a lot of accessibility, a better quality of life.”

All but the Town of Gananoque have signed off on moving ahead with the cost sharing arrangement.

Shankar says that the three other partners will likely move ahead even if all don’t come on board.
