Prescott played important role in 1976 Olympic Games

The world is coming together for the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, France.

With the opening ceremony taking place on Friday, many in our area are taking time to remember the role our region played in the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal.

The sailing events for those games were held in Kingston and, as part of the Olympic Torch Relay from Montreal, the torch was brought to Prescott which was seen as the halfway mark.

It happened on Saturday, July 17 1976 with an event held on the front lawn of Fort Wellington where residents came together to celebrate.

Prescott Museum Curator Fraser Laschinger says it was an event to behold.

“They had assembled a stage with a lot of dignitaries from the local area, including all the mayors from the surrounding townships, it was led by Mayor Pat Kingston of Prescott, he had organized it.”

Laschinger adds there’s an Olympic Torch and a piece of Mount Olympus from Greece that was presented to the town as part of the event, both are on display at the museum.
