SD&G Counties begins springtime load restrictions three weeks early

Expect to see less heavy vehicle traffic in our region’s eastern neighbour over the coming weeks.

As of today, springtime load restrictions are in effect in the United Counties of Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry.

The restrictions have come into effect three weeks ahead of schedule because of how mild the winter has been, and warm weather in the forecast for the coming days.

While they’re in effect, vehicles can only carry five tonnes of material per axle on most roads within the region.

The restrictions are put in place to protect roads during the spring, when warm daytime temperatures and cold nights can weaken asphalt.

They’ll stay in effect until early May, but staff members say they could end early due to the weather.

Last year, the United Counties of Leeds and Grenville had similar load restrictions in effect from February 15th to May 15th.

We’ve contacted the Leeds and Grenville Roads Department to learn when restrictions will come into effect this year.
