River Route: ridership up 47% in 2023, new bus may be needed

As South Grenville municipalities prepare to review their agreement to keep the River Route bus service running, ridership numbers for last year have been released.

According to a staff report to Prescott council, 2023 saw a 47 percent ridership increase on the bus route, which runs between Brockville, Augusta, Prescott and Edwardsburgh-Cardinal.

The report claims that the increase in ridership led to a decrease in cost-per-rider to operate the service, down to $29.90 last year compared to $43.20 in 2022.

The report also urges the Town of Prescott to consider applying for funding to replace the current bus the service uses. That vehicle was provided by the City of Brockville, and staff say it’s beginning to show its age.

Council discusses the report at their next meeting Monday night.
