“Go and contact the police:” Prescott Fire Chief comments on scam callers

Firefighters will only ever raise money at community events and will never go to you directly for donations, says Prescott Fire Chief Renny Raynor.

Raynor spoke with MyPrescottNow about some recent reports of scammers calling residents in Prescott and Augusta, urging them to donate to their fire department.

Augusta Fire Rescue issued a warning about the scam earlier this week, with the Prescott Fire Department putting out a similar warning the next day.

“If we were ever to go out to the public, it would be in an event of some nature, where we would all be there,” Raynor says. “If somebody were to get a call, or someone came to their house, to ask for donations, they should definitely go and contact the police so that they can deal with that.”

Augusta Fire Rescue’s statement on social media was similar, saying the calls were “100 percent a scam” and telling residents that it would never raise money that way.

We’ve contacted Augusta’s Deputy Fire Chief for comment.
