Ontario Power Generation installing “ice booms” throughout St Lawrence River

If you’re going out on the water this month, be careful traveling through narrow stretches of the St. Lawrence River.

Ontario Power Generation is warning residents that “ice booms” are being installed along several stretches in the South Grenville area.

“Ice booms” are made from chains and wood and laid throughout the river to help the ice form a smooth surface as the temperature drops.

That smooth surface helps mitigate ice flow and jams over the course of the winter.

Workers say they’re being placed in the river near Galop Island, in the North Channel, and near both Johnstown and Prescott.

They’re being installed over the course of December and will remain in place for the entire winter, before being removed ahead of the St. Lawrence Seaway shipping season.
