Less people are dying on local roads because police officers are more visible to drivers.
That’s OPP Provincial Constable Dave Holmes’ theory why there have been less fatalities on Grenville County roads this year compared to 2022.
So far, there have been two road fatalities this year, compared to five last year.
“We do our best, when we’re not already at a call for service, to be on the roadway, conducting speed enforcement, conducting stop sign enforcement, anything, really,” Holmes says. “Including using cell phones, we do our best to be in those high-traffic areas, and just try to be vigilant with enforcement.”
Holmes says his team wants residents to know officers are out to educate people, as well as to enforce traffic laws.
“When we have the opportunity at a traffic stop, we also like to emphasize the importance of not using your cell phone while driving,” he explains. “It’s not just because it’s a charge and there’s a fine attached to it, but because you’re putting other road users at risk.”
If you’re worried about road safety now that snow has started falling in our region, Holmes is also offering some advice for drivers to prepare for winter. You can read more about that here.
