“Walk 4 Freedom” charity event for sex trafficking victim support coming October 21st

Residents have a chance to help bring a wellness centre for sex trafficking victims into our area.

Beacon Bags, a local charity that provides victims with essential items when they’re rescued from trafficking operations, is running its annual “Walk 4 Freedom” event on October 21st.

“Our ultimate goal is to open a wellness centre for the women and girls, that police will just bring them to that first night when they get picked up, as opposed to, like, a hotel,” explains Denise March, the charity’s founder.

“We have some long-term care resources for the girls,” she adds, “but we don’t really have anything for that first night pick-up and to help them until we can get them to long-term care.”

All the proceeds from the walk will go towards that project, and March says the event has expanded beyond Prescott, with walks being organized in Cornwall and Brockville as well.

The walk is set to begin in Prescott on the 21st, at Seaway Christian Church. Registration opens at 11:00 in the morning. March says the walk will be postponed if it rains this weekend, likely to the 28th.
