Stanley Cup winner, others wish SGDHS Coach happy retirement

Past graduates from South Grenville District High School (SGDHS) are congratulating their former coach on being inducted to the school’s Wall of Fame.

Kevin Devaney was inducted at the school’s graduation ceremony last week, ahead of his retirement.

Several past South Grenville Giants athletes, including recent Stanley Cup winner Ben Hutton, are congratulating Devaney for the achievement on social media.

“Congrats on the retirement and being inducted to the Wall of Fame,” Hutton says. “Took a little while to get there, but that’s good. Looks like you’ve got some time for some golf, so I’ll see you on the course. No excuses this time.”

Josh Rupert, who played volleyball at SGDHS before graduating in 2005, says his positive memories of Devaney are his main motivation to become a teacher himself.

“What I wanted to do is thank you for pushing me towards that path, showing me what a great educator can be, and I know I’m not the only one that’s part of these videos, saying the same thing,” Rupert adds.

We’ve reached out to Devaney to talk about his time at the school and his feelings about his former students’ messages for him.
