OPP: Be cautious with door-to-door salespeople

Local police officers are warning residents to be careful if someone knocks on your door offering to mow your lawn.

Community Safety Officer Annie Collins says residents might start to notice door-to-door salespeople offering services like lawn mowing or driveway re-sealing as spring continues into summer.

She says you should take steps to protect yourself against scammers by asking anyone making an offer like that for their ID and the name of their business or organization.

You should also ask for references, see if they’ve done work for anyone else near your home, and avoid sharing personal information like a utility bill so they can’t steal your identity.

“If there is a question as to the legitimacy of the canvasser the Canadian Anti-Fraud agency can be contacted,” Collins adds.

She also says you can call the OPP at 1-888-310-1122 to report suspicious canvassers or salespeople.
