South Nation Conservation issues water safety statement

As spring rainfall starts to come to our region, South Nation Conservation is urging residents to be careful about rising water levels.

The organization has put out a water safety statement, saying low-lying areas in the region could start to experience some flooding over the coming days.

“As snow continues to melt, rivers and streams across the jurisdiction will result in higher water levels, fast flowing water and slippery or unstable banks,” the statement reads. “Additionally, these conditions elevate the risk for ice breakup and ice jams at bridges, culverts and other areas producing localized flooding concerns in low lying areas.”

People living in flood prone areas are being encouraged to make sure they’re prepared by clearing the area around their sump pump and ensuring it’s working properly, having backup pumps and generators on standby if the power goes out, and securing anything that could float away.

Staff members also say residents should be cautious around bodies of water, and tell kids not to play near them because of unstable ice and slippery conditions.

The statement is in effect until March 31st, but the organization says it’ll issue updates if the situation changes. You can view more information on South Nation Conservation’s website.
