Steve Clark under investigation by Ontario integrity commissioner over Greenbelt decision

UPDATE: MPP Steve Clark responded to our request for comment with the following statement:

“The Minister welcomes the integrity commissioner’s dismissal of the complaint lodged by the Green party leader – in particular, the decisive finding that ‘there is no evidence that either the Premier or the Minister advanced their private interest’ through the recent changes to the Greenbelt. The Minister also looks forward to being cleared of any wrongdoing at the conclusion of the investigation”.

The provincial integrity commissioner is launching an investigation into the Leeds-Grenville-Thousand Islands and Rideau Lakes MPP after a request from the Ontario NDP.

The investigation began Wednesday, with the goal of finding out if Clark, the Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing, tipped off developers that land in the Greenbelt would be for sale ahead of the announcement.

Clark announced in November that land in several portions of the Greenbelt were being removed from the protected area, with more acres being added elsewhere. The change was finalized in December.

The complaint was lodged by incoming NDP leader Marit Stiles, citing media reports that land in the area had been purchased by developers as recently as September.

A previous complaint about the decision, lodged against Premier Doug Ford by Ontario Green Party leader Mike Schriener, was dismissed by the integrity commissioner

In a statement to Global News, Clark says he welcomes the commissioner’s decision to dismiss that complaint, and that he looks forward to “being cleared of any wrongdoing” once the investigation comes to an end.

We’ve reached out to Clark for comment.
