LGL Medical Officer of Health: no plans to bring back school mask mandates

“I am not considering re-issuing mask mandates in schools at this time.”

That’s Dr. Linna Li, the Medical Officer of Health (MOH) for the Leeds, Grenville and Lanark District Health Unit.

We reached out to Dr. Li asking if there were any plans to reintroduce mask mandates after the University of Waterloo made them a requirement for indoor activities on its campus Wednesday.

“We continue to work together with local school boards to discuss safety plans,” Dr. Li continues. “The Health Unit also continues to monitor local data and consults with the province and with Medical Officers of Health in surrounding areas to assess risk and determine if extra precautions are needed.”

Dr Theresa Tam, Canada’s Chief Public Health Officer, said the federal government is now recommending people wear masks as an extra layer of safety against respiratory illnesses, like COVID-19 and influenza, at a press conference Thursday.

You can read more information about those diseases on the Leeds, Grenville and Lanark District Health Unit’s website.
