Augusta Township warning of black bear sighting on Maitland trail

Be careful the next time you’re out for a walk in Maitland.

In a public notice, Township of Augusta staff say a black bear was seen near the walking trails at the Maitland Education and Recreation Centre.

“The trails are still closed until the season starts, but those in the area should be cautious.” it reads.

If you see a black bear causing a possible emergency, like entering a schoolyard during school hours or trying to go inside someone’s home, staff say you should call 911.

In non-urgent situations, they say you can instead call the provincial government’s “Bear Wise” reporting line, which operates 24 hours a day from the start of April to the end of November, at 1-866-514-2327.

You can read the full notice on the Augusta Township website.
