Health Unit no longer handling septic tank inspections, permits starting October

Leeds, Grenville and Lanark District Health Unit staff say the organization’s “land control services” program is ending for 19 municipalities next month.

The program, which the Health Unit has maintained since 1998, mostly involved issuing septic system permits and performing installation inspections, as well as inspecting sewer maintenance systems.

“This change is based on a decision by our Board of Health in February 2022 and will allow Health Unit staff to focus resources on its primary public health mandate, outlined by Ontario Public Health Standards, and continue to work through the agency’s recovery phase of the COVID-19 pandemic,” says Health Unit worker Katie Lamb.

The Town of Prescott, as well as several other nearby communities like Brockville, will be offering these services internally going forward, in what Lamb calls a “one stop shop” arrangement.

The change takes effect on October 1st, but Lamb says if you have a permit issued by the Health Unit before September 30th, the organization will continue to handle inspections for that permit until the end of 2023.

You can find a full map of affected communities on the Leeds, Grenville and Lanark District Health Unit website.
