Merrickville Beach unsafe for swimming for third straight week

Three beaches in the region have been listed as “unsafe for swimming” this week by the Leeds, Grenville and Lanark District Health Unit.

The organization’s latest results from its water monitoring program, testing local beaches weekly for E. coli bacteria, were posted Friday morning.

According to the Health Unit, Merrickville Beach has concentrations of E. coli that could cause ear, eye and throat infections in swimmers, for the third week in a row.

The Campbell Street Beach in Portland, a village in the Township of Rideau Lakes, is also listed as “unsafe” this week alongside a third beach in Lanark County.

Signs have been posted at all of them warning people to avoid swimming, and they’ve been added to an online list of unsafe beaches on the Health Unit’s website.

The test results are posted on the organization’s website and social media pages every Friday morning.
