NGDHS prom committee donates $1,300+ to Connect Youth

This year’s graduating class from North Grenville District High School (NGDHS) is putting the leftover money for their prom towards a local charity.

The school’s Prom Committee, a group of students and parents that organized fundraising events in our area over the spring in order to host their own prom without the help of the school, had $1,373.43 in money left over after the dance earlier this month.

The money was donated late last week to Connect Youth, a Prescott-based charity organization that supports struggling children in the Leeds-Grenville region with affordable housing, after-school programs and other initiatives.

Michelle Ansell, one of the parents on the committee, says Connect Youth was chosen by the student body.

“The children put it to a vote,” she says. “They put an Instagram story up so they could vote.”

Other charities that were being considered include Lanark, Leeds and Grenville Addictions and Mental Health, as well as Big Brothers Big Sisters of Leeds and Grenville.

Ansell says Connect Youth plans to put the money towards its summer programming.

“A lot of the students rely on going to school to have the support from their peers, as well as their teachers,” she says, “and in the summertime, they might not have as many people to turn to, so these summer programs really help them out at Connect Youth.”

Christopher Bourne, the principal at NGDHS, says he’s proud of the students for organizing the event and their donation.

“It was a tremendous idea for the organizing students to donate the excess funds,” he says. “Asking the students which charity they wanted to support makes it that much more meaningful.”
