Ontario government announces planned expansions to Highway 401, 417

Big changes are in the works for two of the busiest highways in our region.

The provincial government has released what it calls “Connecting the East: a draft transportation plan for eastern Ontario,” a document outlining its plans to reduce gridlock, expand public transit and improve the flow of traffic throughout the area.

As part of the plan, Highway 401 would expand to eight lanes within the United Counties of Leeds and Grenville.

Other plans include adding truck stops along the 401, and expanding Highway 417 to four lanes, in all directions, between Highway 416 and Maitland Avenue in Ottawa.

“Our government is building Ontario by getting shovels in the ground on highways, roads and public transit needed to fight gridlock and keep goods and people moving,” says Minister of Transportation Caroline Mulroney.

“Our transportation plan for eastern Ontario will unlock access to housing, employment and tourist destinations,” she continues, “while supporting significant trade corridors and economic growth in the region.”

The province will start with what it calls a “long-range technical study” of the region’s entire transportation network, to see if any changes need to be made to the draft plan. That’s expected to begin this summer.
