Fort Town Night Run returns to Prescott with “steampunk” theme May 7th

Some changes are coming to our community’s annual charity run at Fort Wellington.

For this year’s Fort Town Night Run, organizer Julie Larose says people are being encouraged to wear “steampunk” costumes.

“If you just think of Victorian, quirky fashion, it would be a great idea,” Larose says. “People like top hats or tailcoats, women often will have bustiers or fancy dresses, but they would have to be modified a little bit for running.” She says “wild west” costumes are also popular at steampunk-themed events.

The Fort Town Night Run is an event where runners of all ages race on five, ten, or fifteen-kilometre routes through Prescott, passing landmarks, historic homes and heritage sites along the way. Kids ages 13 and under can also enter a one-kilometre “fun run” race.

The money from the event is going towards “groups that offer active programs for youth and youth at risk,” including Scouts Canada and Air Cadets, according to Larose.

Larose says the idea for the theme came from the look and feel of the town. “Between having the train, the ferries that used to run in Prescott, the fort and the buildings and so forth,” she says, “it just fits really well, and so it’s a fun theme for us to celebrate in Prescott.”

The races are being held on May 7th. If you’re interested in taking part, the Fort Town Night Run website has a more detailed breakdown of the routes and ticket prices. The deadline to register is April 1st.
