MP Brown: tax breaks denied for charitable giving

Leeds Grenville Rideau Lakes MP Gord Brown is slamming the government on their denial of a bill related to charitable giving. Brown says federal tax credits for political contributions far exceed the federal tax credits for donations to registered charities in Canada.

MP Ted Falk’s Private Members Bill – C-239 – The Fairness in Charitable Gifts Act, would have allowed registered charities to provide their donors with the same generous donation receipts that politicians can now issue. The Bill was defeated by the Liberals and NDP on Wednesday.

The number of Canadians donating to charities has been on a long-term decline across the country. The percentage of tax filers claiming donations in 2013 fell to 21.87 per cent from its high of 29.5 per cent in 1990.
