Health Unit: “no risk at all” to mixing Pfizer and Moderna COVID-19 vaccines

Doctor Paula Stewart says you don’t need to worry about the limited availability of Pfizer COVID-19 vaccines right now.

Stewart, the Leeds, Grenville and Lanark District Health Unit’s Medical Officer of Health, says the limited availability is because clinics are conserving the Pfizer doses they have. “Right now, vaccine clinics have Moderna for the 30+ [age group],” she says. “We’re saving the small amount of Pfizer we have for the 12 to 29 year old age group’s first, second, or third doses if they’re over 18.”

Stewart says the organization is prioritizing access to Pfizer for the younger age group due to the risk of pericarditis and myocarditis, two kinds of heart inflammation both vaccines can cause in rare cases that are slightly more common among Moderna recipients.

Dr. Stewart also says having doses of both Pfizer and Moderna vaccines is perfectly safe. “There’s no risk at all,” she says, “because it’s triggering the exact same immune response in the body.”

If you want to book an appointment to get vaccinated against COVID-19, or get a booster shot, visit the health unit website. The organization also posts clinics with walk-in appointments available on its Facebook page.
