Nearly half of local kids have first COVID-19 vaccine dose

Our region’s Medical Officer of Health says she’s extremely happy to see kids in our area getting vaccinated against COVID-19.

Dr. Paula Stewart, with the Leeds, Grenville and Lanark District Health Unit, says nearly half of local kids ages 5 to 11 have had their first vaccine doses. “43.9 per cent of the kids have had their first dose,” she says, “up from 37 per cent last week.”

Dr. Stewart says the number of kids getting vaccinated has increased dramatically since the health unit first received the child-friendly doses back in November. “The last two weeks, we’ve really seen a surge in the number coming forward,” she says, “which we’re really, really pleased about, because we’re seeing huge spread in elementary schools where the kids don’t have any vaccines.”

If you’re interested in having your child vaccinated, or booking an appointment to get vaccinated yourself, visit the health unit’s website.
