Additional charges laid in Prescott online dating scam case

The Grenville County OPP detachment has announced 50 new charges as part of an investigation into a 2019 fraud case.

Police began investigating the suspect, a 35-year-old man from the Greater Toronto Area, after a Prescott resident reported being scammed via an online dating platform. The man was arrested and charged with one count of fraud over $5,000.

In the time since arresting the man, another investigation was started by the detachment, with assistance from the Ottawa Police Unit’s Anti-Rackets Branch and other organizations. As a result of the investigation, the suspect has been charged with 15 counts of identity theft, 18 counts of possessing credit card data, and 17 other new charges.

The suspect last appeared in court earlier this month in Brockville, and police say he’s currently in custody.
