Outpost Cafe in Prescott providing discounted meals to people struggling financially, proceeds going back into community

The Centennial Road Church’s new Outpost Cafe, a non-profit, volunteer-run restaurant created by the church in Prescott, has announced that it will be providing discounted food and drinks to people who need financial help. According to the cafe’s website, all customers can receive one discounted meal and drink per day, no questions asked.

In an exclusive interview with MyPrescottNow.com, Carrie Hordyk, the manager for the cafe, says there are other ways the cafe plans to help people in need in the community. “All of the proceeds,” Hordyk says, “are going to be, first, poured into the cafe – so, meaning, operations costs and those kinds of things. The rest is going to go towards meeting the needs of those who live and work in Prescott. So, it’s not going to go back into the church, it’s going to go to where we see, or where people tell us, ‘hey, there’s a need here’, and we’re gonna see how we can meet it with those funds.”

Hordyk also says a system is in place for people to receive further discounts on food at the cafe. “We have a button system,” Hordyk says, “that we’ve adopted from a cafe in Hamilton, Ontario, and it’s just kind of where, you can come in and you can purchase a button for a dollar, and someone else can use those buttons, up to five per day, to pay for their meal. So, instead of using cash, they can just use a button, and then it would make their meal either free or cheaper.”

The cafe is run entirely by volunteers. Hordyk says high school students can apply to volunteer as part of their mandatory community service hours. In the future, Hordyk says, the cafe plans to organize job prep programs for students.

The restaurant opened on October 18th. A grand opening event, in partnership with the Town of Prescott, is being held on October 23rd at 1:00 PM.
