In February, Leeds Grenville MP Gord Brown requested the Competition Bureau investigate Brockville’s gas prices when over 1,400 people signed a petition. In his letter, he pointed out the huge price disparity in gasoline from Ottawa to Gananoque and points in between. The Bureau reacted by calling Brown’s office to explain that without concrete evidence that owners are conspiring to adjust prices, it could not do anything.
Brown has requested that the minister update the guidelines and mandates of the Competition Bureau to reflect the realities of monopoly markets in small centres.
