“That’s the new reality”: MP-elect Michael Barrett wants high-speed internet across riding by 2025

In an exclusive interview with MyPrescottNow.com, Michael Barrett, the Conservative MP-elect for Leeds-Grenville-Thousand Islands and Rideau Lakes, spoke on his plans to improve our community’s online infrastructure.

“This is kind of a perennial topic in our community,” Barrett says. “We made commitments that, by 2025, high-speed internet would be available and connected for everyone in our community. That’s speeds of 50 down and 10 up, as the minimum standard.”

“The former government, now re-elected government,” Barrett continued, “has said that that would be done by 2030. And, so, my challenge to them is to reassess and to adjust their timeline, because really, what people need is gig service, or comparable to gig service, to the home. That’s the new reality of people working from home, and getting everything from medical services to doing school from home, and staying connected during the particularly hard times we’ve had over the last 18 months.”

Barrett ended the interview by saying he’s eager to continue representing Leeds-Grenville-Thousand Islands and Rideau Lakes. “I look very forward to having that privilege going forward, and to be the voice of our community and to take our message to the floor of Canada’s House of Commons.”

“I’m always accessible, my door is always open, and I look forward to continuing to serve our community.”
