South Grenville athlete comes 37th out of 50 in France ultramarathon

A local athlete is recovering after a 171 kilometre run.

Amanda Wallace, a South Grenville High School alumnus, competed in the Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc (UTMB), an ultramarathon around the tallest mountain in the Alps. The race began on Friday in France, along a trail that normally takes hikers a week or more to fully cross. The route for the race moves through Italy and Switzerland before coming back to France for the finish line.

Amanda began the race with a goal time of 46.5 hours, and finished in 44 hours. In order to qualify for the race, Amanda had to run a 100 mile race in 2019. Amanda struggled with nausea and vomiting throughout the race, which she says was her third ultramarathon.

“I can’t stop throwing up”, she said in a Facebook post during the run. “It’s going to be a slow roll to the finish as I yack on this rock, but I’ll get there in less than 46.5 hours.”

Amanda finished the race 37th overall out of all 50 women who finished the event. She thanked her friends and family at home, and her training partners, for their support on her Facebook page yesterday.
