The Algonquins of Pikwakanagan First Nation (AOPFN) now have a stake in a renewable energy project.
The First Nation, through the Chi-Nódin Partnership, has bought a 50.01 percent ownership in the Nation Rise Wind Farm. The twenty-nine turbine project is located in the United Counties of Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry. The 100-megawatt wind farm is fully operational as of last month and is producing energy. The project will be run by EDP Renewables, which is one of the biggest renewable energy producers in the world. The company will be responsible for operations and maintenance.
Amanda Two-Axe Kohoko with the Chi-Nódin Partnership Board of Directors says this is a great opportunity for the First Nation. She adds they will continue to look for similar ventures in the future.
AOPFN is actively investing in renewable energy and is operating five microfit energy projects in their community.
