Police warn of deadly drug on local streets: synthetic fentanyl

There is a new danger on the street and it’s deadly. Synthetic Fentanyl is extremely powerful and dangerous in even the smallest quantity. Brockville Police Detective Sergeant Tom Fournier says if you’re buying illegal drugs, you might be getting something completely different from what you are expecting. Some dealers are mixing other narcotics with the synthetic fentanyl.

Synthetic fentanyl may also be known by its street name of “w18” or “faded 80’s” and sold at a discounted price from the traditional fentanyl patches. Detective Sergeant Fournier spoke to us about this new and dangerous drug form.

Police say some people may be buying what they think is cocaine, heroin or oxycontin, but the dealer has cut it with fentanyl so he can make more money. The combination can be deadly. The Leeds Grenville and Lanark District Health Unit advises a portion of synthetic fentanyl as small as two grains of salt is enough to be fatal.
