Augusta Fire Rescue Launches Sparky’s Summer Contest

Kids in Augusta are being asked to create a plan in case of a fire.

Fire Chief Rob Bowman says they’re launching Sparky’s Summer Contest, in an effort to get kids and families to plan and practice their own home escape plan.

“You want two ways out of every room, have a meeting place outside, and make sure you’re practicing it,” Bowman said. “It’s great to have a plan, but if you don’t practice it, it won’t work as well.”

The contest requires kids to draw up their own plan, which will be submitted to Augusta Fire Rescue.

Five winners will be selected from the contest, and they’ll receive a special pizza delivery from Sparky the Fire Dog, as well as some fire prevention gift bags.

Bowman says the contest also stresses the importance of having working smoke alarms on every floor of your home.

“Once those alarms are heard and they’re set off by smoke, they’ll know how to get out and how to get out quickly so that everyone in their family will be okay,” Bowman said.
