As we head into the long weekend and the beginning of the season for many boaters, the OPP is releasing information about recent tragedies on the water. So far this year there have been eight fatalities on the water.
Contrary to the belief that fatal boating incidents usually take place in motorized vehicles, six of this year’s victims were in canoes or kayaks. Seven of the victims were in their twenties. Not a single one of them was wearing a life jacket.
Police are counting on the public to be vigilant about safety on the water. If you see someone operating a boat while impaired, call 9-1-1.
