Kemptville man sentenced to six years in death of cyclist

A Kemptville man is going to jail for six years after causing another man’s death. 54-year-old Mark Gagne, convicted of dangerous driving causing death, heard his sentence in a Brockville courtroom on Friday. The judge says Gagne’s claim that the “accident” could have happened to anyone didn’t work in his favour.

Gagne hit Roy Chapman with his truck while the victim was riding his bicycle on Townline Road in Kemptville, in 2014. The accused said he took his eyes off the road for a few seconds to reach for his cigarettes, and was unaware he had hit anything.

With time served, Gagne faces an additional four years seven months jail time.
