Police are warning people about the dangers of online shopping following the arrest of a woman who was involved in a puppy-for-sale scam.
On November 21st, a person reported they had responded to an advertisement on Kijiji regarding puppies for sale.
Police say the ensuing interaction led to the victim e-transferring just under $900.
Before the pickup date, the seller contacted the buyer and told them they no longer had the dog and could not return the funds.
Officers spoke to the seller, and they promised to return the money to the victim by mid-December, however; no money was received.
As a result, police arrested an 18-year-old Quebec woman and charged her with fraud under $5000 and obtaining money under false pretense.Â
The woman has since been released and she will be before a judge on January 27.
Police are reminding people to use caution and educate themselves on current frauds that scammers are using online.
Call the OPP or the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre, if you think you’ve been victimized.Â
