UCDSB takes steps to provide a better education for First Nations students

First Nations, Metis and Inuit students will benefit from a more inclusive education at the Upper Canada District School Board. At a recent meeting, Director of Education Stephen Sliwa presented an update to trustees on FNMI education in the board.

Senior UCDSB administrators and trustees attended a meeting of the Ahkwesahsne Mohawk Board of Education as part of an overall effort to invest in a productive and respectful relationship with the Akwesasne community. Board Chair Jeff McMillan has written a letter to Education Minister Liz Sandals offering recommendations in regards to FNMI education. The Board has also sponsored two upcoming Truth and Reconciliation Commission +1 meetings. The regional meetings, to be held next month, will include learning sessions with indigenous elders and knowledge keepers, and a facilitated discussion on what reconciliation means.
