Watch for Radon in November, says Health Unit

Health Units Say in November, watch for Radon.

Health units across Ontario are raising awareness for the invisible gas. Kim McCann, Senior Public Health Inspector with the Leeds, Grenville, Lanark Health Unit, says Health Canada did a survey that found that approximately 18% of homes had radon gas within. McCann says that the gas is more prelevent in the winter months because people tend to close up their homes during winter, leading to less ventilation and more trapped gas. Radon gas can cause lung cancer in high concentrations and is the second leading cause of lung cancer in Canadians.

McCann says that the only way to know if you have the gas in your home is to get a detector. If levels are above 200 bqm, you will need to call in a certified mitigation specialist, who will inspect your home, look at your levels, and seal up any leaks you may have. In some cases, the specialist will seal up cracks in your home or even install a special radon ventilation system. To use a radon test kit, McCann says to place it at the lowest level of your house where you spend more than 4 hours a day.

At the Leeds, Grenville and Lanark District Health Unit, there is a Facebook video, and if you private message them, you can receive a free test kit. Radon kits can otherwise be purchased at your local hardware store.
