Is your child a late talker? Here’s what to do.

The Language Express Preschool Speech and Language Program helps children with many types of communication and literacy difficulties.  This May, they are highlighting late talkers. Program Manager Catherine Robinson says most children speak their first real words around 12 months of age, and they are up to about 24 words by a year-and-a-half.

Rather than taking a wait-and-see approach, the experts at Language Express advise you seek help for your late talker. Robinson says many late talkers will not catch up without help. Even the children who do seem to catch up may have trouble later with grammar, complex language, and learning to read and write.
