Cardiac doctor loses hospital privileges over inappropriate behaviour

A doctor who works closely with the cardiac unit at Brockville General Hospital has been suspended. Internal medicine specialist Dr. Jay Bhatt has had hospital privileges for nearly forty years. The discipline committee of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario cites a history of complaints from colleagues and staff, saying Dr. Bhatt displayed inappropriate, derogatory and unprofessional behaviour.

BGH President and CEO Tony Weeks says the college has suspended Dr. Bhatt’s Certificate of Registration for a four month period. While Dr. Bhatt has made notable contributions to the Ambulatory Care Unit, Stroke Prevention Program and the Cardiovascular Rehabilitation Program at the hospital, BGH can neither condone nor support this type of behaviour towards its patients and staff. Dr. Bhatt’s privileges will be reviewed at a later date.
