UCDSB donates food, funds earmarked for nutrition programs

The Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB) is diverting food from its school nutrition programs to area food banks.

The board says the goal is to assist families during the COVID-19 pandemic. The donation was made possible by an agreement between the Upper Canada Leger Centre for Education and Training, which runs the programs for the board, and the Ministry of Children, Community and Social Services, which funds them.

John McAllister, UCDSB Chair, says the board is happy that the food and funds that go into these programs will continue to be used as they were intended. He noted that there are many children who rely on these programs and countless families that rely on community food banks.

“We hope that diverting this funding and the food will help alleviate some of the added pressure that is being felt by these vital community services,” he explained.

Cheese, yogurt, cereal bars, bread and other nutritious food will be donated to the South Grenville Food Bank, Agape Centre in Cornwall, Hawkesbury Central Food Bank, Rockland Held Centre, Operation Harvest Sharing and Gananoque Food Bank.

The board says the items will be reserved for families with school-aged children. Donations will start rolling out this week.
