First case of COVID-19 confirmed in Leeds, Grenville and Lanark

There is now one confirmed case of COVID-19 in Leeds, Grenville and Lanark. Dr. Paula Stewart, Medical Officer with the Health Unit, made the announcement earlier today.

The individual is a woman in her 70s, who recently returned from the United States.

Dr. Stewart noted she is in isolation at home, experiencing moderate symptoms of the virus, including a cough, shortness of breath and fever. She explained the Health Unit is now actively investigating anyone who has been in contact with the woman and those people are being told to self-isolate for 14 days.

Dr. Stewart says due to confidentiality, the specific community in which the woman lives will not be made public. Her condition is currently being monitored by a public health nurse.

“Having an individual diagnosed with COVID-19 in our area is not surprising,” explained Dr. Stewart. “This reinforces the importance of the public health measures in place such as school and non-essential service closures, as well as personal precautions like staying at home for 14 days after travel outside the country, physical distancing, covering coughs and sneezes, staying home when sick, and regular hand hygiene.”

She says the government is taking the necessary steps to slow the spread of COVID-19 and what’s really going to make a difference is the actions of people across the region and country.

Moving forward, the Health Unit will be posting COVID-19 case numbers to its website rather than announcing individual cases.
