Meals on Wheels hitting the streets to raise awareness

A nationwide campaign to promote Meals on Wheels is about to get underway. March for Meals kicks off in Brockville on Monday.

Community & Primary Health Care (CPHC) has invited area businesses and community champions to help deliver meals to raise awareness for the program.

The campaign stops in Prescott on March 23 and 24, at the Mayfield Retirement Home, with Mayor Brett Todd, Councillor Leanne Burton and the Prescott Fire Department helping out.

Hailie Jack, CPHC Community Support Services Manager, says the program connects many different community supports to get meals out to seniors and others in need. She explained another big part of Meals on Wheels is the social welfare checks that go hand-in-hand with volunteers delivering meals.

She says the program is always in need of more volunteers, to go out during the lunch hour in Prescott, Brockville and Gananoque. Jack noted it usually takes about an hour and people can call 613-342-3693 to become a volunteer.

She explained the goal of the campaign is to get people talking about Meals on Wheels.

The program provides close to 3 million meals annually, according to Jack, serving over 50,000 individuals nationwide.
