County passes budget with 0.3% tax reduction

The United Counties of Leeds and Grenville is reducing its tax rate. Counties Council passed its 2020 budget, with a 0.3% decrease, last week.

CAO Andy Brown says the reduction is due to several factors. He noted when staff were putting together their budgets, they were directed to start at zero. Brown explained that staff had to look at all the elements that take up each line and in doing so, they identified some savings. He says at the end of the day, there will be no impact to service.

The 2020 budget includes increases to both the hospital levy, up from 0.5% to 1%, and the infrastructure levy, up from 1.5% to 2%.

Brown noted the hospital levy totals around $400,000 and will go towards primarily brick and mortar projects for all hospitals that service Leeds and Grenville.

Capital road projects are also on the docket, including $2 million to rehabilitate County Road 42 west of Athens, $1.8 million for County Road 1 in Rideau Lakes and $1 million for County Road 10.

The Counties budget totals $105.2 million this year and $41.7 million of that derives from taxation.
