Special Olympics launches volunteer recruitment campaign

Special Olympics Ontario Brockville & Area is putting out a call for volunteers. The organization launched a recruitment campaign earlier this month.

Leslie Lehman, member of the Special Olympics fundraising committee and swim coach, says the goal is to encourage students and community members to get involved as coaches, assistant coaches and sports managers. She noted the campaign serves a dual purpose by getting the word out to athletes in Brockville, Prescott and Spencerville about the program.

The organization is partnering with Kelseys in Brockville to host a fundraising event on February 24. Lehman explained that 10% of all food sales between 5:00 and 9:00pm that night will go to the Special Olympics. She says promoting volunteerism is also on the agenda.

Lehman noted the organization boasts nearly 200 athletes locally, which shows the need and demand for the program. She explained the Special Olympics is there to ensure that people with intellectual disabilities have the opportunity to participate in recreation and sports. Lehman says the organization offers a wide variety of sports, ranging from basketball and swimming to bocce and track & field.
