Shortfall of foster families in Lanark, Leeds and Grenville

Family and Children’s Services (FCS) of Lanark, Leeds and Grenville is putting out a call for foster families.

Tyler Holmes, Assessment and Recruitment Worker, says the goal is to add 20 new foster homes this year. He noted the biggest need is in Brockville, but the recruitment campaign spans the entire region. Holmes explained there’s a particular need for people willing to take in youth between the ages of 12 and 18.

The most important quality for foster parents is a desire to help kids, according to Holmes. He says one of the biggest things FCS looks for is people who are flexible: not too rigid or black and white in their family structures. Holmes noted you also have to be empathetic and very caring to work with kids.

Criteria to become a foster parent includes being over the age of 18, having adequate space in your home and financial stability. The four to six month process involves face-to-face meetings with FCS staff, a criminal record check, 27-hour training program and home safety assessment.

Holmes explained fostering is about so much more than just providing kids with a place to stay. He says it gives children the chance to have a home environment, surrounded by people who care about them and look out for their best interests.

For more information, contact FCS directly by calling 613-489-2100. An information session is set for February 26 at the Wall Street United Church in Brockville, starting at 6:00pm.
