Province dumps landfill near Spencerville

The Ontario government has revoked environmental approval for the ED-19 landfill site. MPP Steve Clark was in Spencerville last night to make the announcement.

He noted the approval was originally granted to the United Counties of Leeds and Grenville in 1998, but the landfill was never developed.

Clark explained that the Hon. Jeff Yurek, Minister of the Environment, Conservation and Parks, questioned whether the 21-year-old approval protects the environment and public interest.

He says the government is committed to ensuring landfills are designed, constructed and managed in a way that protects communities.

MP Michael Barrett and Kyle Johnston, of the Citizens Against the Dump (CAD), joined Clark at the rally.

Johnston says the decision is a win for the people of Leeds and Grenville.

ED-19 is located in the Township of Edwardsburgh/Cardinal, at the west end of Byers Road.
