Prescott applying for funds to replace water tower

The Town of Prescott may be getting a new water tower.

Committee of the Whole voted in favour of directing staff to prepare a funding application for the project on Monday night. The dollars are through the Canada Infrastructure Program: Green Stream.

Councillor Leanne Burton says this is a good step in the right direction. She says in 2017 there was a thorough inspection of the water tower as part of the asset management plan. Burton says the report pointed out Prescott needed to start planning the five year process for a new water tower.

Councillor Lee McConnell noted the new water tower is projected to cost between $3 and $3.5 million.

CAO/Treasurer Matthew Armstong says there hasn’t been a specific municipal cap given yet and the town should be receiving that in the next few weeks. In a report from Armstrong it says a population-based formula will be used to determine each applicant’s funding cap. The program will provide up to about 73% funding.

Mayor Brett Todd had concerns over the funding caps based on population and says it makes him wonder what the cap will be.

The application is due by January 22.
