Local family, blogger pushing for Rangers to honour Frank Boucher’s jersey

Frank Boucher is the greatest Ranger of all time, according to Sean Mccaffrey. The hockey blogger, who lives in Long Island, NY, is pushing for Boucher’s #7 jersey to be hung from the rafters of Madison Square Garden.

Mccaffrey explained Boucher was there when the New York Rangers were born. Nearly 100 years ago, on November 16, 1926, Boucher took the opening ceremonial face-off against Nels Stewart of the Montreal Maroons. It was the first puck dropped in Rangers history.

Boucher went on to have his name engraved on the Stanley Cup three times – twice as a player, in 1928 and 1933, and once as head coach in 1940. His career with the Rangers spanned nearly three decades, from 1926 to 1955.

Mccaffrey stumbled across a book and Boucher’s name kept coming up, which sparked his interest. He says he started reading more about him and questioned how Boucher had three Stanley Cup victories under his belt and his jersey wasn’t in the rafters.

Mccaffrey did more research and started writing about Boucher. He explained a member of the Boucher family found his blog and put him in touch with Boucher’s granddaughter, Frankie Baird. The pair ended up meeting for the first time last month. Baird still lives in Kemptville, where Boucher spent the final 22 years of his life. Boucher also has relatives living in Prescott.

Mccaffrey says he brought some friends along for the trip and it was cool to see these three big city Americans being welcomed into a Canadian’s house, all because of hockey.

Baird sent a letter to the Rangers about her grandfather, but never received a reply. She explained his #7 jersey was retired, but never ended up in the rafters. Baird noted Rod Gilbert, who also wore the #7, is up in the rafters. Her goal is to see her grandfather’s name featured in that place of honour.

Boucher was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1958. He was also inducted into the Kemptville & District Sports Hall of Fame in 2010.
