Dairy barn razed, cattle lost

A dairy barn just outside of Burritts Rapids burnt to the ground.

The North Grenville Fire Service (NGFS) and Merrickville Fire Department were dispatched to the fire on County Road 23 on Saturday night.

Heavy flames were visible from the barn upon arrival, according to the NGFS. The owners of the property were home at the time of the fire but were not in the barn when the fire broke out. The building contained cattle and a dairy operation.

The owner noticed the fire just before 9:00pm and called 9-1-1. The owner was able to release some cattle from the barn. However, the fire spread quickly and several cows were lost in the blaze.

No other injuries were sustained, but the owner was checked by paramedics for smoke inhalation.

The NGFS says this is considered a large loss fire and the Office of the Fire Marshal was advised and consulted. Heavy equipment was utilized to help firefighters extinguish the hot spots of the collapsed structure. Tanker assistance was provided by the Augusta Fire Department and Ottawa Fire Services.

The NGFS remained on scene until Sunday to maintain a fire watch and secure the scene. The financial loss is not known at this time.
